Turn off fuel and run the engine til it quits, usinng the choke to keep it going as long as possible to drain the carb. You want to use SAE 10-30 oil in the engine, and use high test gas to try and prevent alky damage. There should be no problem with the carb, if the machine is taken ccare of. There is nothing wrong with the HS series techumseh engines, as long as the proper oil is used and YOU CHECK the oi level every time you fill the tank. If the owner will noot let you inspect, you might offer $100, oor juust walk away.ĭoes the impellor run true? Eating a frozen news paper will bend the shaft and vibration will tear everything loose in short order. Make sure the belt sheives are not rusted, nor the belts cracked or glazed badly. The disc rides on a hexaconal shaft to give forward and reverse, make sure the rider/carrier mothes on the shaft (shift gears) The carrier gets stuck sometimes. If there are no chunks or cracks in the drive disc, you may get away with it for a while. If you buy, I would replace the belts and the disc as a matter of course in maintainance. See if the seller will allow you to take off the pan from under the machine and the plastic belt cover so you can make an inspection.

As others have mentionned, the friction drive disc and belts will be the first to go.

I believe that the machines of that era were actualy built by NTD.
